Leidse Cantorij – Choir of St. Pancras Church

The Leidse Cantorij was founded in 1968 and is based in the monumental, fourteenth-century Hooglandse Kerk in Leiden, the Netherlands (lit. the ‘highlands church,’ formerly St. Pancras church, on the “high” land of Leiden). The choir participates in church services of the ‘Leidse Binnenstadsgemeente’ (Protestant church community in the Hooglandse Kerk), as well as Choral Evensongs in Leiden and other cities around the country, such as Rotterdam and Utrecht.

The choir is led by Hans Brons, a passionate conductor, who took over the choir from his father Joop Brons, founder of the choir, in 1980. The accompaniment is since 2018 in capable hands of our organist Willeke Smits, who is also the organist of the Leidse Binnenstadsgemeente.

The choir is travels regularly to England to sing and study Choral Evensong as a visiting choir in various cathedrals in the UK, including St Paul’s Cathedral in London, York Minster, Peterborough Cathedral and Gloucester Cathedral.
